Prepare a useful enquiry

Three things that help
us understand your needs.

01

Application first

Describe the finished product or process and the role of the ingredient.

02

Specification matters

Include composition, form, function and the product characteristics relevant to acceptance.

03

Supporting information

Clarify the ingredient documents, labelling information or test data your business needs.

Build a more specific brief

Which ingredient form do you need?

These examples help you describe a sourcing requirement. They are not a stock list: supply, origin, processing and suitability must be confirmed for each enquiry.

Dehydrated vegetable pieces

Dried onion, garlic flakes or another vegetable: name the botanical product and the form you need.

Specify cut size and tolerance, preferred colour, moisture or water activity requirements, and how the ingredient will be rehydrated or added to your process.

Enquire about dehydrated vegetable pieces

Vegetable powders

Garlic powder or another vegetable powder: describe the application and required composition.

State particle size or mesh with the measurement basis, whether carriers or additives are permitted, and any flow or dispersibility requirements. Confirm a sample against the agreed specification.

Enquire about vegetable powder

Pulse ingredients

Chickpea flour, lentil flour or another pulse ingredient: identify the species, form and process required.

Clarify whether you need whole, dehulled, milled or heat-treated material. Provide particle size, any compositional targets and the intended cooking or manufacturing process.

Enquire about pulse ingredient

Turmeric for food applications

Describe whether you need dried whole turmeric or ground turmeric for a seasoning, blend or food-manufacturing process.

State the botanical identity, required form, particle size where relevant, colour and composition criteria. If curcuminoid content is specified, include the target, units and test method. Share any treatment, contaminant-testing and batch-document requirements for your destination.

A whole-spice enquiry

Whole black pepper.

Preparing a peppercorn enquiry for seasoning, grinding or food manufacturing? Identify the product as whole black pepper and describe its intended use. This is a sourcing-enquiry example: source, processing, availability and destination suitability require confirmation.

Enquire about whole black pepper
  • State the botanical identity, whole-berry form and any origin preference. Describe required cleaning or treatment; do not assume a treatment is included.
  • Give berry-size or sieve requirements, bulk density with units and measurement method, and acceptance criteria for light berries, damaged berries and foreign matter where specified.
  • Share moisture or water-activity requirements. If pungency or aroma parameters are specified, provide the target, units and test method rather than relying on a grade name alone.
  • List the microbiological, residue and other contaminant evidence your quality team requires for the destination. Agree how sample and test documents identify the proposed lot.
  • Include quantity, pack format and net weight, storage requirements, delivery location and timing. Assess the sample in your application before approving a specification.

CBI’s black-pepper buyer guidance explains relevant quality considerations. No standard grade, test result, treatment, certification or stock is implied.

  • Identify the ingredient, intended use and required product form. Separate essential limits from preferences.
  • List the microbiological, chemical and physical criteria your team needs, with units, limits and test methods where known. Ask whether evidence applies to the offered product and batch.
  • Clarify allergens and cross-contact information, permitted additives or carriers, traceability and the documents you need. Do not assume a certificate applies to every source.
  • Give pack material and net weight, required storage conditions, remaining shelf life at delivery, quantity and timing.
  • State origin preferences and the destination country. Import, export and destination suitability need to be assessed for the actual product.

Use the product specification guide to prepare acceptance criteria and the sample evaluation checklist before approving a sample.

Ingredient questions

What should be confirmed?

Fresh or dried: which enquiry route should I use?

First state whether the product is fresh, dried whole, cut or ground. These forms need different specifications and handling. Use the fruits & vegetables category for fresh produce, or an ingredient enquiry for dried or milled material. Include the intended use, processing requested, pack, storage needs and destination. Availability and suitability require individual confirmation.

Are powder, granule and flake specifications interchangeable?

No. Specify the required form and size distribution. For powders, state particle size or mesh and the applicable measurement basis; for flakes and pieces, give dimensions and tolerances. Assess the actual sample in your process.

Does a sample confirm the quality of every delivery?

A sample supports evaluation of that sample. Agree how it represents the proposed supply, what documents are required and how future batches will be assessed. A successful sample does not replace an agreed specification.

Is ground turmeric the same as a turmeric extract?

No. Describe the actual product and intended application. This enquiry example concerns turmeric for food applications; an extract, supplement or medicinal-use request needs a separate assessment. No health benefit, standard curcuminoid level or destination approval is implied.

Can I discuss sourcing into India as well as exports?

Yes. Share the ingredient, preferred origin if any, destination, intended use and quantity. Product availability and applicable shipment requirements need confirmation before any commercial commitment.
