Sourcing by enquiry

Packaging & paper sourcing.

Discuss paper bags, cartons and protective packaging for your business. Share the item and intended use first. This is a sourcing enquiry route: product availability, supplier suitability and destination requirements must be confirmed before an offer.

Prepare a useful enquiry

Three things that help
us understand your needs.

01

Specify the packaging

Identify the item to be packed, dimensions, material preference and how it will be stored or transported. State whether the packaging will contact food; suitability must be separately assessed.

02

Make the comparison measurable

For cartons, include construction or strength requirements if known. For bags, include handle and closure preferences. Request drawings or a sample against your acceptance criteria before approving production.

03

Plan the order

Separate quantities by size and print design. Include packing configuration, shipment destination and timeline. Recycled-content or environmental claims require evidence for the actual material; they are not assumed.

Start with the format

What are you packing?

Choose a starting brief below. These are enquiry examples, not a stock list. Material, source, availability and suitability require confirmation.

Sourcing by enquiry

Corrugated cartons & cases

Describe the packed item, its weight and the protection needed during handling and transport.

  • Internal length × width × height, in millimetres, with tolerances.
  • Box style or reference drawing; include a FEFCO style code if you already use one.
  • Board or flute requirements, closure method, stacking conditions and any specified strength tests.
  • Print design, quantity by size, packing arrangement and delivery location.

Paper bags & sacks

Explain whether the bag is for carrying, retail presentation or packing a product.

  • Width, gusset and height, in millimetres, and usable capacity or intended load.
  • Paper specification, handle or closure type, lining or barrier requirements if needed.
  • Artwork, print colours, quantity by design and required packing format.
  • Intended contents and contact conditions; product suitability must be assessed separately.

Another packaging requirement

Glass bottles & jars.

Preparing an empty glass container enquiry? Describe the contents and filling process before choosing a bottle or jar. This is a sourcing-enquiry example; supply, closure compatibility and destination suitability require confirmation.

Enquire about empty glass bottles or jars
  • Give the required fill volume and, if specified, brimful capacity. State units, tolerances and measurement conditions; these capacities describe different things.
  • Share a dimensioned drawing with height, body dimensions, colour, glass weight if specified and neck-finish details. Include the proposed closure, liner and sealing method.
  • Describe the contents, filling temperature, any heating or cooling process, internal pressure and storage conditions. Ask for evidence for the actual container-and-closure combination; do not assume every jar suits hot filling or pressure.
  • Specify sample checks for dimensions, closure fit, leakage, appearance and handling, with test methods and acceptance criteria where known.
  • State the quantity by size, outer packaging, dividers or pallet requirements, delivery location and timing. Discuss transit damage, inspection and replacement terms when comparing offers.

Cetie's glass-container technical references cover terminology, dimensions and testing. A reference drawing or standard does not establish ExpoWing certification or product compliance.

For packaging that touches food

Describe the contact conditions.

A material name alone does not establish suitability for your food or process. Include the following details with a carton, bag or container enquiry so the actual material and supporting evidence can be assessed.

Discuss food-contact packaging requirements
  • Identify the food and the surface in contact with it, including any liner, coating, printed layer or closure. Explain whether contact is direct or through another layer.
  • Describe filling, heating, cooling and storage temperatures, contact duration and whether the pack is single-use or intended for repeated use.
  • Give the destination market and request the applicable supplier declarations and supporting test information for that material, food and intended use. Check that document references match the proposed pack.
  • Agree who will review the documents and sample before approval. Record any limitations or changes to the material, artwork, supplier or intended use that need reassessment.

The European Commission food-contact materials overview explains why material-specific evidence matters for EU enquiries. Other destinations need their own assessment. This checklist is enquiry preparation, not a compliance declaration or confirmed supply offer.

One agreed reference

Make the specification comparable.

A drawing and clear acceptance criteria help avoid comparing different packaging requirements.

  • State whether dimensions are internal or external. Label each dimension and include units; a photograph alone may not show capacity or construction.
  • Describe the actual product, load, stacking, handling and storage environment. Share any test methods and pass criteria your team requires.
  • Separate quantities by size and artwork. Clarify tooling or artwork charges, sample arrangements and delivery scope when reviewing an offer.
  • For food contact or another sensitive use, describe the intended contact and conditions, then request supporting evidence for the actual material and supplier.
  • Ask for evidence before relying on recycled-content, certification or environmental claims. No such claim is assumed for this enquiry catalogue.

Use the product specification checklist for acceptance criteria and the international offer comparison guide to clarify delivery costs and responsibilities.

Packaging questions

Before approving a sample.

Does a box style code establish strength or suitability?

A style reference describes construction. It does not replace your material, strength, size or intended-use requirements. Agree those details and how the sample will be assessed.

Can I enquire about packaging imports as well as exports?

Yes. Include any preferred origin, the destination country and delivery location. Feasibility, applicable documentation and commercial terms must be assessed for the individual requirement.

Are standard prices, minimum orders or lead times available?

None are assumed across the catalogue. Quantity by size, material, printing and delivery scope affect the enquiry. Confirm prices, minimum quantities, sample costs and timing before making a commitment.

Useful technical reference

Share a drawing or style reference.

The FEFCO packaging design code can help identify a corrugated box style. It is a design reference, not an ExpoWing certification or an assurance of material performance.
